Articulate Storyline to Word — Editable .docx Export

Pull every slide, layer and quiz out of an Articulate Storyline SCORM and into a clean Microsoft Word document — perfect for SME review and translation.

    Quick Answer

Upload your Storyline 360 SCORM .zip and ScormToDoc parses the story_content/ structure to recover every slide layer, text frame, image and quiz interaction. The output is a structured .docx with proper Heading 1/2/3 hierarchy — ready for SMEs, legal review, or translation pipelines.

Articulate Storyline is the dominant authoring tool, but its SCORM output is a tangle of story_content/ JS bundles, frame.xml structure files, and embedded media references. Reading it without Storyline installed is borderline impossible — and even Storyline itself doesn't export to Word.

ScormToDoc decodes the Storyline structure directly. Every slide layer is walked, text frames extracted, images embedded inline, and quiz interactions formatted with bold questions and labeled answer choices.

    How it works (3 steps)

    1. Upload
Drop your SCORM .zip — Articulate, Captivate, Rise, iSpring, Lectora, or Easygenerator. We auto-detect the authoring tool.
    2. Extract
We parse manifest, slides, scenes, quiz interactions, narration audio, and every embedded image — locally in your browser, no server upload required.
    3. Download
Get a clean PDF, Word doc, or PowerPoint deck — plus a Content Vault with every raw asset ready to reuse.

    How Storyline-specific extraction works

Storyline stores course content in story_content/ as JS bundles that look like JSON but include obfuscated keys for slides, layers, text frames, and quiz objects. Our Storyline-aware parser walks frame.xml first to get scene order, then dives into each slide bundle to recover layer text, image references, and interaction logic.

Multi-layer slides (intro layer + content layer + feedback layer) are flattened into a single Word section with a layer indicator, so reviewers see the full content set without losing context.

    What gets extracted

    • Every Storyline slide as a Word section with proper headings
    • All slide layers (base, content, feedback) flattened in order
    • Embedded images at original aspect ratio
    • Quiz questions in bold with labeled answer choices and feedback
    • Branching scenario text (static representation)
    • Course title from imsmanifest.xml

    Common gotchas

    ⚠️ Storyline 1 vs 360 differences
Older Storyline 1/2/3 files use slightly different bundle keys. Our parser handles both, but Storyline 1 may produce slightly less structured output.
⚠️ JavaScript triggers are not exported
Custom JS triggers (e.g. random number generators) cannot be replayed in Word. Their text labels are extracted but logic is not.
    ⚠️ Hotspots become static descriptions
Click hotspots and drag-and-drop become text descriptions of what the learner would do. Use the PDF/PPTX for visual representation.

    Frequently asked questions

    Which Storyline versions are supported?

Storyline 360 (current), Storyline 3, Storyline 2, and Storyline 1. The parser auto-detects the bundle format.

    Are slide layers preserved?

Yes. Each layer is flattened into the same Word section with a layer indicator, so reviewers see all content without losing context.

Will branching scenarios work in Word?

Branching logic itself does not work in a Word doc, but every scene's text content is extracted so reviewers can see all paths.

Can I edit the resulting Word file?

Yes — fully editable .docx with Track Changes, Heading hierarchy, and inline images.

Does it work with Rise too?

For Rise, use our dedicated Rise extraction page — different content structure (React SPA vs. Storyline's story_content).

How is this different from Storyline's built-in Word export?

Storyline does not have a native Word export. The closest option is "Print Storyboard" which produces a Word doc with screenshots — not editable text. ScormToDoc gives you the actual underlying text in editable form.
